There are records of the church of Santa Maria de Almika (St Mary of Almika) in the 11th century, when Lope Enekones, the Lord of Vizcaya and his wife Lady Tecla, donated it to the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla in 1096. In the 14th century after perhaps having been returned to the Lords of Vizcaya, it was donated once again by the Lady of Vizcaya, Juana de Lara y Lord Tello, to the convent of San Francisco. 26 years’ later it became the property of the Abendaño family. The church of Almika, after suffering a fire in 1565, was reconstructed and extended. In 1894 the chapel of San José (St Joseph) was constructed and, between 1901 and 9103, the chapel of the Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart).
