In Bermeo, on the way to Bakio, close to the commemorative park for those who have died at sea, the following inscription by Walsingham is shown in Basque, Spanish and English:
“They preferred, because of the rudeness of their heart, to die rather than to surrender”.
There is a plaque indicating the following in Spanish:
“The Provincial Council of Vizcaya erects this commemorative monument to the underwater enthronement of the Virgin of Begoña that was planned and carried out by the Vizcaya Club for Underwater Activities. Bermeo 15-9-1963. 14-9-1969)”
In addition, the following inscription is to be found in Spanish on another part of the monolith:
“We dedicate a Prayer in remembrance of the fishermen who perished at sea during the violent NW wind blowing on the night of the 12th to 13th August 1912. 116 fishermen from Bermeo were amongst them.”
"In Memory of Brother Rafael Laredo, ex-professor of La Salle de Bilbao who willingly publicized his marine iconographic exhibitions. Our Lady of Begoña, patron saint of Vizcaya, enthroned in the Cantabrian sea
10-9-1995 CEVAS"
