CANDELARIA

Under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Mundaka. Until the 19th century the hermitage of Candelaria (Candelmas) was dedicated to saints Just and Pasteur and was located alongside the Justu farmhouse, on the other side of the path. The first documented records of this hermitage date back to the 17th century. From these it can be gathered that the Council of Bermeo would go on a pilgrimage to the Magdalena de Izaro, to Gaztelugatxe and to this hermitage of Demiku in order to proclaim ownership of these territories. Since the end of the 18th century the poor condition of this hermitage was evident. In 1797 repair work was seen to be necessary and, in 1819, after having been closed for a long period of time, a request was made to demolish it. In 1934, the new hermitage was opened, on the other side of the path, opposite the site where the former one had stood, this time dedicated to Our Lady of Purification. However it is locally known as Kandelarioko ermitea. This hermitage was reconstructed in 1970.
