The records for this church date back to the 14th century. At one time the general meetings of the Guild of Seamen were held there and the stewards were chosen for that institution. The church was dedicated to the Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) and St Marina, from which the names of Kurtzio and Santamañe are derived. The hospital of San Lázaro is located to the west, alongside the hermitage. The northern façade of the hermitage was reformed at the beginning of the 20th century, providing windows and constructing a new bell tower. The height of the hermitage was increased. The old bell tower and former entrance arch can still be seen on the southern façade.
